The winery had been in family hands since its inception (1830). When Antonia Borrego died in 1976, the estate was passed to his widow Pilar Pla Pechovierto. It was a time when overt and systemic misogyny dominated, and the idea of a winery owned by a woman was at the very least frowned upon. Even while she grieved, men knocked on her door with offers to buy the winery, stating that she could never make it on her own. With the help of the community around her, she did much more than simply survive.
There’s so more to the story, but we’re running out of room.
Hopefully somebody writes the book.
For now, just have a glass and give a toast to the spirit of resilience.
(While having some Castelvetrano olives, Marcona almonds and cured meats.)
